The food handling scenarios and food safe action plan is tailored to students who are doing food or cooking tasks at school as well as those who are working in commercial kitchens, cafes or restaurants.

What's included?

The 60 Food Handling Scenarios pack includes:

  • 60 full color scenarios on printable task cards featuring common food handling problems that occur at home and in the workplace
  • Information about the resource and how to use it
  • A food safe action plan for solving each scenario in two formats
  • A checklist of common food handling rules to help identify problems - this is in two formats to suit lower readers and more capable readers

What to do

Teach your students about food handling rules and expectations in the kitchen. Share information about how food poisoning, contact with allergens and problematic foods and other issues can affect people who eat food.

Focus on key learning areas such as:

  • Food handler hygiene and wellness
  • Reporting and communication
  • Cross contamination
  • Allergies and intolerances
  • Cleaning
  • Packaging
  • Damaged and out of date foods
  • Temperature danger zone
  • Hand washing
  • High risk foods

Divide students into groups so they can share the food handling scenario task cards. Give each group a food safe action plan and a checklist so they can identify the food handling problems and discuss the best strategy to use in their action plan.

Bring the groups back together so they can share their learning and you can resolve and clarify issues, concerns and reinforce key learning messages about food handling. Discuss how the food safety scenarios and solutions might apply in a home or commercial kitchen, such as a restaurant or cafe. Make clear links between classroom learning and workplace situations.

Collect documents from students as evidence of food handling learning.

Most importantly - remember to have fun! Learning about food safety and safe food handling is an important topic for students in hospitality, work education and cooking classes, so it is important to enjoy it and help your students retain the key information. Remind them about the key food safety messages next time they are enjoying a practical cooking class together.

Enjoy your cooking classes!
