What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is a concept that is often used in schools and workplaces to support people working together effectively in teams and groups. It is a notional measurement of the ability of people to understand and use their knowledge of emotions to manage situations effectively. Emotional intelligence has been written about by many researchers and writers, particularly Daniel Goleman who developed a model with four domains of emotional intelligence:
- Self awareness – learning to identify and understand own emotions
- Self management – learning to manage and utilise own emotions
- Social awareness – becoming aware of the emotions of others and responding to them effectively
- Relationship management – using knowledge of emotions to build positive relationships with other people
