What to do?

  • Build employability skills (also known as soft skills) through games, activities and direct teaching.
  • Talk about customer service jobs and brainstorm some of the problems which can occur.
  • Avoid talking about 'difficult customers' - in most cases, there are simply problems to be solved, rather than the customer themselves being 'difficult.' Encourage a professional, respectful approach which aims to solve the problem for the customer, rather than seeing the customer as being the problem.
  • Print and share the customer service problem cards with pairs of students.
  • Ask them to spend 2-3 minutes talking about the problem and discussing their best answer. Remind them to talk about what they would say and do.
  • Allow time for students to write their answer in their notebook, using the number of the card so they can remember which answer matches with each problem.
  • Have the pairs swap cards so they work on a new problem.
  • Repeat so that all the pairs practise answering the cards in turn.
  • Bring the groups back together and talk about the problems and the solutions they found.
  • Ask for a volunteer pair to role play one of their problems and the solution they used.
