PLanning community activities for life skills is an ideal activity for emerging readers who prefer strong visual cues. It includes plans and task cards for special needs and life skills learners. Teach your students how to get ready for a community based activitysuch as going to the pool, doing a day trip, visiting a friend or going on camp.  Students plan what to bring with them, using a differentiated approach with choice of 1, 2 or 4 items for each community based instruction activity.
 
Use the printable activity plans to help students choose what to bring for a community activity as part of an independent work packet in the classroom before a community access day.

What to do?
Print the activity pages and choose the best option for each student based on their learning needs
Print the item cards and choose a suitable number of cards for each student based on their needs and the activity page they are working on
Show students how to choose and paste or place the item card onto the activity page
Alternative options:
Work with a para or support teacher to make a sentence about the items selected for an activity.
Use the item cards as part of a morning routine before going on a community activity
Make links between leisure activities and items needed for the activity - goggles, towel, change of clothes for swimming, sunscreen and hat for the park, money for shopping at the supermarket.
Discuss items that are not needed for an activity - no need to take a snack to the cafe, don't take cash to the pool, don't bring a pillow on the train to the city.
